Genesis 1:2-5

Genesis 1:2 "And the earth was without form and void and darkness was upon the face of the deep and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters".

1) "And the earth" - this still refers to the water

2) "was without form" - this water had no form. Water only takes form when either in a container, or as in this case we will see, when forces act upon it to make it into some form.

3) "and void" - this does not mean ruined or desolate as some people (gap theorists) would interpret. It simply means empty - no land, no vegetation, uninhabited - simply empty.

4) "and darkness was upon the face of the deep" - the universe was not formed into shape, not lighted or energized in any way. We use the word deep when referring to the oceans, seas, or huge bodies of water. Here it refers to the same thing, a huge unshaped body of water. 2 Pet 3:5 tells us that the world was formed out of nothing but water. Darkness is the absence of the light spectrum.

5) "and the Spirit of God" - the third person of the Trinity. We know that God spoke space, time, and matter into existence. We know that Christ is attributed with the creation of the world - John 1:1-3. Now we see the Holy Spirit taking an active part in creation. The Hebrew word for Spirit is "Ruach" which means wind or breath. Christians as a rule understand that this doesn't mean that the Holy Spirit is simply a force, as some off-shoots of Christianity like to say. We know He is a person from the Scriptures. He teaches - Luke 12:12, John 14:26, 1 Cor. 2:13. He can be blasphemed - Mt. 12:31, Mk 3:29. He can be lied to - Acts 5:3. He can be grieved - Eph. 4:30. He guides and speaks - John 16:30, Acts 10:19-20, 13:2. He forbids things - Acts 16:6. He testifies - John 15:26. A force cannot do these things, only a person can.

6) "moved upon the face of the waters" - The Hebrew word rachaph (moved) used elsewhere in Scripture means to shake or flutter. In other words a back and forth motion or vibration. The universe needed an energizer (not the bunny). It needed the energy to make things work. All energy in the universe finds itself in the form of either gravitational or the electromagnetic spectrum. These encompass all forms of energy. They are all transmitted by forms of waves or vibrations. Energy cannot create itself (1st law of thermodynamics). It had to be put into motion by an outside force. The Holy Spirit breathed and the universe vibrated into motion. The gravitational forces, once set upon the waters, pulled them into a form - namely the sphere we know as earth. If you add energy to a sphere of water, its molecules line up and it takes on an electromagnetic field around the whole sphere. Thus the earth's magnetic field. Magnetic fields are essential for life processes. All biological systems function on the energy of the earth's magnetic field. The exchange of information on the cellular level is chemical and magnetic. The earth's magnetic field is decaying exponentially. If one backtracks, the earth can be no more than the age that the Bible sets it at, as the magnetic field would be too strong for enzymes to hold together. Even 10,000 years is too great an age. At 15-20,000 years, the energy would have the approximate intensity of a magnetic star and atoms could not hold together. The magnetic field is now very low. It is causing problems at the cellular levels. At this time, the forces also set in motion the rotation of the earth on its axis. This will be demonstrated more clearly in the next few verses.

Gen. 1:3 "And God said let there be light and there was light."

1) God speaks out loud for the first time. This is important to note. He did not speak the universe into existence, but he speaks light into existence. Scientists have discovered that when sound is introduced into pure water under just the right circumstances, it creates light. This experiment has actually been done (on a very small scale). Naturally God has no problem with size. When God spoke it is possible that the sound of his voice created light out of the water. All of the light spectrum would now exist. God didn't have to "bara" the light out of nothing. The laws of science that he had just created went to work for Him when He spoke. He merely flipped on the light switch. We will see that God does not create out of ex nihilo anymore, but that He uses the materials at hand that He has just created. This seems indicated by the words "bring forth" when it comes to the plant and animal life. With Adam, He uses the dust of the earth.

Gen. 1:4 "And God saw the light, that it was good and God divided the light from the darkness."

1) "And God saw the light, that it was good" - Good is to be used in the widest sense here. Beautiful, fine bountiful, the best, etc. Untainted by sin and decay.

2) "and God divided the light from the darkness." - God drew a line of demarcation that the light waves were not allowed to cross or rather from which they bounced back. There was emptiness and absence of light waves on one side of the universe and nothing but light on the other side. No sun yet, merely a full field of light waves bouncing around.

Gen. 1:5 "And God called the light Day and the darkness He called Night, and the evening and the morning were the first day."

1) "And God called the light Day and the darkness He called Night" - God wants to make very clear that this is a 24 hour day. We know that the gravitational forces that pulled the earth into a sphere would have started it revolving. Now we have proof of this, as the earth knows night and day. If it were not revolving, it would not know both, only one side would know darkness and the other light. Night and day as we know them are two sides of a 24 hour period of time.

2) "and the evening and the morning were the first day." - If there was any doubt as to the above mentioned being true, God clarifies again that a day has passed. Morning and evening only happen if the earth is rotating. One only follows the other when we rotate on our axis. This combination of terms, night and day, morning and evening, one day - all are clearly meant to emphasize that this is a 24 hour period on a rotating earth. God couldn't be more clear, and yet some refuse to accept this and say that the word day or in Hebrew "yom" means a period of time such as millions of years. This is not possible from the grammatical context and not possible scientifically as we shall soon see. God has given three definitions so as not to be misunderstood, and yet there are those who persist in misunderstanding, so as to accommodate the evolutionary theory.

  1. Connie, You have explained "The Beginning" so clearly to me. I thought I understood it, but I see now that I only knew or accepted it on a peripheral level. Thank you for explaining it on a deeper level. I enjoy having you explain it scientifically. And, hey, I actually understood and learned alot, too.
Keep this up.....this is great stuff!
